Christina Gaudette's Submission:

In 2004 I tipped the scale at 213 lbs. I was miserable, had no motivation, was tired, self-conscious and just plain uncomfortable. I made every excuse in the book as to why I put on the weight but I never took control of the situation until one day I was asked to do the 5km Run for the Cure. I jumped at the opportunity and didn’t want to let my team down so I started walking, then running, every other driveway and then every other block until it came time to run the event. But would you believe we ended up talking so much we could only walk it? That was the turning point for me. I wanted more.

I started with leisure guide boot camps and taking my daughter for stroller runs, then progressed into a gym membership, and half marathons. It still wasn’t enough. I found myself at a plateau at 170 lbs. What else could I do? My husband said that my goals were unrealistic because there was only so much time in a day. But I remained strong… or maybe it was stubborn? Out of a 24 hour day, 15 ½ hours are spent at work. And 1 ½ hours are spent commuting, so really there’s not much left. Regardless, I hired a trainer and signed on in January 2012 with the goal of participating in Novice 2012. Those three months, I gave it my all, waking at 2:30 a.m. to do strength training and cardio, followed by a quick shower in time to head to work and go about my regular family duties that typically followed.

Then, just as I was in the final 3 weeks of prep for competition, my husband was injured in a sledding accident and broke his back. Although, I had to spread myself even thinner between the gym, work, and the hospital I remained focused. The end result, I didn't place in the top 5 in 2012, but I made a strong showing and became even more determined to get there in 2013.
