Dave's Submission:

Dave Harms is no stranger to the gym. He started his weight lifting journey in 1999 while attending Kelvin High School. Initial work-outs in the high school basement were great for the ego, however, the weight training was somewhat misinformed by eager peers full of bad advice and poor training habits. Regardless of the lack of formal training Dave experienced success and some very satisfying results were visible in short order. All through High School the weight room and gym would play an important role in Dave's life and often it was in the gym that life seemed most manageable.

Even with the desire to work out in a daily way, the fundamental understanding of the training essential for sustainable Body Building was something Dave had not explored in a formal way. In 2003 Dave went through some very difficult times. During this dark period of his life the gym was his solace and there he met a Body Builder who planted the seed of one day competing in the novice body building competition. This inspiration was formative for him as he began to heal in mind, body and soul and kept him grounded as he was making new decisions for his life. It was during this time that he learned that there was much more to the sport than just big biceps and chest and that it would require a comprehensive "whole body" approach in order to be a successful competitor in the bodybuilding world.

After several set backs, both personal and physical, Dave found himself ready to seriously take the challenge to be the best that he could be and begin a formal training program that would lead him to a competition. He made his way back to the gym with the focus of competing in March 2011 at the novice level. Once the commitment to formal excellent training was made, Dave sought out the support of a qualified trainer Sasha Herwig who could take his gifts to the next level. The next weeks revealed the grueling reality of what it takes to be a body builder - it would take courage, stamina, discipline and complete focus to follow the regiment of diet, sleep, and workout time if he wanted to reach his goals.

With just over 4 weeks to competition time Dave is learning to lean into the last stretch and keep the intensity high. Without the support and sponsorship of Gorilla Jack's top-of-the-line supplements his body would not be responding in a healthy way to the high intensity workouts.

Dave is a full time house painter running his own woodwork finishing crew and ceiling texture crew. He and his partner Janice have a beautiful energetic four-year-old who requires a great deal of time and attention. Between the demands of family life and work demands, time is scarce but training has been possible with the support of the extended family members.
