Emily Striemer's Submission:

Everyone knows that pregnancy changes a woman’s body. What they don’t tell you is that the way you feel about your body can change as well. When I became pregnant with my oldest daughter, my body quickly went from something that I knew inside and out to something foreign to me; an entity that I no longer recognized, no longer connected with, no longer wanted anything to do with. I hated how I looked and how I felt, and I began to resent my body. Even after my daughter was born, I still felt betrayed by my body for changing so rapidly and, in my opinion, so negatively. I responded by beginning to ignore my body’s needs. I stopped giving it healthy food, daily activity and the attention that it requires to be healthy. The more I turned away from supporting my body, the more it became repulsive and broken to me. Finally, I saw a picture of myself at 30 lbs overweight, and I realized that I had become so far detached from my body that I cold no longer recognize the person inside it. I knew that I needed to make a change.

I joined up with a post-natal workout group, and immediately I remembered what it was about being active that I used to love so much. Slowly, I began my journey back to health and fitness. And the second time that little strip turned blue, I was ready for it. My second pregnancy could not have been more different than my first. I stayed active, I ate well and I learned to be grateful to my body for the amazing things it could do, not the least of which being grow, nurture, deliver and sustain two beautiful, healthy babies.

After my second daughter was born, I knew it was time to do something to give back to my body for everything I had put it through, and everything it had done for me. I dedicated myself to a daily workout routine, clean eating and really reconnecting with myself. My journey to the MABBA Novice stage has been one of self-discovery, redefining my health and, most importantly, rediscovering why my body is so spectacular.

It has been a tough road. Two and a half years filled with ups and downs, detours and uphill battles. Hundreds of pounds gained and lost, dozens of times wanting to quit and two tiny reasons to keep going. I am looking forward to showing off my hard work and passing on a legacy of fitness, health and positive body image to my daughters. MABBA here I come!
