Jennifer's Story (as submitted by her sister Katie):

After a hard year of dealing with the loss of her older brother, as well as her mom fighting fourth stage cancer, Jennifer Oleson has transitioned into a completely new person. Last year, her mom was diagnosed with fourth stage cancer and it has been a constant struggle with that ever since. And when things started to look slightly less gray, she lost her older brother at the age of 24 in a truly heartbreaking accident. After battling to keep everything from falling apart Jen was in one of the darkest places someone can find themselves. Every day was a different struggle and keeping it together was the hardest thing for her. However, Jen has never been the type to show emotion, she buried it deep inside and let it build.

After coming home from a trip from Australia, Jen took control of her life again. She started working out at Shapes Fitness Centre to find a way to release some of the anger and stress she had. At 5'3" and 137 lbs working out gave her only small results at first. Through meeting new people at Shapes she was introduced to the idea of competing in MABBA's 2011 Novice Fitness Show. She spoke about it from time to time but it wasn't until December, 2010 that she decided to set it as a definite goal. She had no idea that what it would really give her was a sense of control and freedom and essentially, her life back. She signed up with a trainer and has been hard at work ever since. Jennifer spends countless hours every day at the gym doing a combination of cardio work outs, weights, resistance training and hot yoga. She is now at 117 lbs and has never felt better. Through all of this she has achieved true happiness and peace with how she feels on the inside and looks on the outside. Working out and concentrating on diet and fitness has become her passion.

But that is only half the success for Jennifer. Growing up she was always the person to bring joy to people but throughout her hardships she struggled to continue viewing things as optimistically as before. Since starting this goal she has been able to bring back that happiness to people. She's been the definition of a role model and leader for her younger sister as well as her friends. She went through one of the most difficult things a human being can possibly go through and she's come out on top. Having someone so optimistic and who truly believes that everything is going to be okay has brought her family together. Jennifer is the glue that keeps us all running and when we feel overwhelmed, all it takes is a reminder from her that nothing is impossible. She has shown all of us that all you have to do is set your mind to it and the results are always worth the hard work in the end.
