Scott Howe's Submission:

Two years ago, I was training and gaining and working my way towards a better body slowly and surely when all of sudden I started to notice I was fatiguing more quickly and more often then ever. It quickly became apparent this was more then just a bug as I began increasingly gruesome trips to the washroom (up to 25-30 a day) which were basically just cups of blood. I was bed ridden and in a week and a half lost close to 50 lbs.

By the time I got to the doctor (getting off the couch was a near impossible task as I was anemic and completely drained from blood and fluid loss - I had also started violently vomiting) I had gone from a healthy 190 lbs to 137 lbs in just over a week.

When I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (an ibd and autoimmune disorder that causes your intestines to essentially pierce holes in themselves and swell up and bleed non stop and create malabsorption issues) I had no idea what it actually meant.

What it meant was a massive amount of corticosteroids, medicines (with side effects which impair joint use and cause degeneration or ligaments and tendons) and hospital stays over two years. Limiting my diet occasionally to just chicken and water 2 times a day and avoiding a bevy of foods considered staples in many healthy diets. Worst of all no dairy, oatmeal or whey shakes.

Eventually I was able to work out a decent treatment plan, that keeps me in remission (fingers crossed) for the most part and for the foreseeable future. Not everyone is so lucky as the only cure is removal of the large intestine, something I was just months from doing not so long ago, but I rallied, stayed positive and with the help of my wife and family pursued my passion for bodybuilding.

To everyone suffering from anything out there. Keep your head up, keep positive, and keep moving forward. Hard work pays off.
